We have summer picnic themed buckets with all your bright hues, cottage crumpet for you pastel lovers and goth harvest if you like those darker flowers- we have black scabiosa coming on strong. A collection of sticks, of wands. After we load up our drying room, we wait three days for the herbs to fully dry, then we garble them and remove the parts we want from the parts we don’t want. Usually this means taking out the stems, but it’s slightly different for each herb. Last week an old herb student came over and told me exactly what each stick in our compost pile was! It was fun to apply her knowledge and experience of working with plants to a new medium. Also, every year I want to get into the wand business. Skullcap harvest with @heycarriemccann @moonsetandco @megdigsplants and Allison! Our hundred foot row of skullcap was begging to be harvested this week. Planted this spring, we put the plants at 6 inch spacing and they loved it. Nestled between the valerian and elecampane in our perennial garden, the larger plants gave shade to this little creature. The last photo shows you how much skullcap was harvested. Skullcap is my FAVORITE plant to grow y’all! It is so cute- the tiny flowers and seed pods that grow in pairs, the creeping roots trying to spread out in typical mint family style. After harvesting we spread compost on top of them to give them some nutrients to grow for another harvest or two this season. Then we will cover them with row cover for the winter- we’ve found out that skullcap really likes that extra protection during the cold months. Now, why do we grow skullcap? It’s a bitter nervine, helpful for anxiety and sleep and the general jitters. It makes a wonderful tincture- hit us up if you want some of the fresh herb next time we harvest. It’s such an honor to care for and grow these plants! #herbfarm #dreamjob #cuttingroot

A lesser known site in the woods- my ramps are about to burst into flower! I collected seeds for these plants on a friend’s land in a spot where they were plentiful and cared for. Now, six years later, there’s a small patch of ramps in my woods. I’ve never harvested them, though they are probably delicious. Ramps are continuously over harvested, poached, taken from the land and sold to restaurants and eaten at dinner tables. I don’t feel like like I need to be a part of that story. My ramp story is one of cultivating, caring for, giving thanks to, and creating space for. The last photo here is of the luscious leaves early this spring, which have since disappeared, leaving only this thin stalk and beautiful flower bud. #caregiving #cuttingroot

Collecting valerian seed tonight. I wish I had gotten to it before the hard rain the last two days, but sometimes you don’t get to everything. I love how my calendar is made up of keep track of who’s going to seed- valerian, cornflower, snapdragons this week… who is flowering- tulsi, calendula, echinacea… who is at the leaf tender stage of harvest, pre-flowering- spring planted marshmallow leaf, mugwort…… and who needs to be filled in to allow for the potential of our next plan- good bye to larkspur, bupleurem, orlaya. I didn’t get any pictures of the process this year, but here’s a before and after shot of our milky oats. This is big medicine, blended into milky oats tincture, dried for teas, and the oatstraw also meticulously dried and processed. It takes some special work to make our soft silky green cut and sifted oatstraw, and if you don’t pay close attention to your drying process it will just look brown and lifeless, resembling straw. This week has been busy, but showing these oats to everyone this week gave me many chances to share the medicine and to remember to take it myself. It’s always in my summer love formula as the long days working frazzle my nervous system and the latex in the oats coats my myelin sheaths, giving a boost to how my nerves communicate- how they take in stimuli and how they let me know what they’ve experienced, allowing my whole person to respond to joy, sadness, grief, and pain.

Every year I hit some trails with my apprentices and clear out the invasive #raspberryleaf. I’ve been tending this trail for three years and have seen a reduction in the growth of this plant. I know folks get excited to see raspberries and stop and pick them, but this trail (a not often used access road) doesn’t have pedestrian traffic on it so I’m confident I’m not bothering anyone’s snackin spot. I’m also conscious of this plant being spread far and wide and taking over understories and in its use as an herbal medicine so I decided to start tending some of these wild trails and remove it. I’ll be back in the fall for invasive root medicine. Our bouquets are gorgeous, we’ve got spring and summer flowers, our marigolds are in most of the bouquets this week and we’ve got huge bunches of larkspur still! (Our spring planted field came on quickly after the fall planted ones were on their way out). We’ve got a limited amount of teas, freshly made from herbs out of the field this season. Annual solstice celebration with the elders! I’ve spent this day with these plants for years, smelling them, watching the flowers fall delicately to the ground, peering underneath the bushes into the deer nests below, chasing butterflies through the goldenrod, laying on earth with pure joy, gratitude, abundance and life. In recognition of my multidimensional self, I am taking the next 24 hours off so if you’re sending an email or text, forgive the delay. Time to get outside and bliss out. #dayoff #selfcare

Thanks for a record breaking market today y’all! Wow. Pittsburgh. It thundered and lighteninged and it rained on you but you came to buy flowers and herbs today. After market I stopped by @eastendfoodcoop to drop off bouquets, so if you didn’t get any of these gorgeous cottage dreamers arrangements, get over there soon. Then I went to the MLK Community Garden to meet the wild cherries herb school and had the best plant walk with such a lovely group of humans. My heart is full, my back hurts, my feet are tired and my cat is falling asleep by my side. Larkspurs are coming on strong! The first two photos are from our fall planted field. They are 5-6 feet tall and blooming beautifully. The last photo is our early spring planted crop, a little shorter and not quite blooming yet. It’s been fun to experiment with both spring and fall plantings and sometimes you win, sometime you fail miserably, but really it’s amazing because you learn! We’re going to fall plant them again this year since the spring time is so busy it’ll help get some things off our plate!
